Employement Law – Health and Safety Urban Myths

The UK Government has set up a panel of “mythbusters” in the light of increasingly outlandish health and safety decisions by councils and insurance companies. The absurd decisions often force employers worried about employment law consequences to take disproportionate and sometimes ridiculous measures to deal with everyday events.

As part of the initiative the Health and Safety Executive has launched a “Top Ten” of the most startling such myths.

Coming straight into the top ten at No.10 is “Graduates ordered not to throw their mortar boards in the air”.

The countdown is listed in full below, but the top three of the health and safety hit parade, sees “Trapeze artists being ordered to wear hard hats” avoiding a fall at No.3; while sticking strictly at No.2 is “Office workers being banned from putting up Christmas decorations”. And the No.1 is the blockbuster “Children banned from playing conkers unless they are wearing goggles”!

Minister for Employment Chris Grayling said: “All too often jobsworths are the real reason for daft health and safety decisions. We want people who are told they cannot put up bunting or play conkers to know there is no basis in law for such rulings.”

We have several employment law barristers that have had many discussions over this!

If you are worried about employment law ramifications in your organisation the Health and Safety Executive website says: “We want people to work with us to challenge these myths – the time has come to end the madness!” You can find out everything you need to know about this and other health and safety topics on their website.

In the meantime, that Top Ten of Absurd Safety Myths is as follows:

1.     Children being banned from playing conkers unless they are wearing goggles

2.     Office workers being banned from putting up Christmas decorations

3.     Trapeze artists being ordered to wear hard hats

4.     Pin the tail on the donkey games being deemed a health and safety risk

5.     Candy floss on a stick being banned in case people trip and impale themselves

6.     Hanging baskets being banned in case people bump their heads on them

7.     Schoolchildren being ordered to wear clip on ties in case they are choked by traditional neckwear

8.     Park benches must be replaced because they are three inches too low

9.     Flip flops being banned from the workplace

10.  Graduates ordered not to throw their mortar boards in the air

My friend needs portable toilets hire and as per usual she’s too scared to ring any companies up and has asked me to do it for her. The thing is I’m happy to help anyone out but I’m getting a bit annoyed with constantly talking for her because she’s too scared. She’s now started to expect it and it’s becoming a chore. I’ve told her if she needs portable toilers hire then she’ll have to call them herself. I even gave her the number of a lovely company called easytoilethire.co.uk who I know for a fact are really nice and friendly and give great portable toilets hire prices but she still won’t call them!

My friend is really excited, as she’s had the all clear to more into the house she’s been building for the last year. Obviously builders have done the majority of the work but she’s had a hard time of organising things such as digger and fencing hire along with budgeting, time frames and getting her hands dirty with work which she can complete herself. She’s found haggling for things such as fencing hire difficult as she’s always left it to her previous husband but I think she’s now really confident so it’s helped in many different ways and she’s now got some valuable contacts such as easyfencinghire.co.uk who provided her with fencing hire.

When it comes to using the internet to get quotes it can be very difficult to know where to go. I wouldn’t just type in the typical thing you’re looking for and hope for the best such as ‘skip hire’ I would use a variety of different keywords or phrases to do with skip hire or whatever you’re looking for. It can take you a long time to go around the different companies getting different quotes and even when you’ve found them online often you need to ring up. Visit comparison sites such as tuxebo.co.uk so that you can get a variety of skip hire quotes without the leg work.

My husband and I have a plot of land, which since we moved into our home we haven’t done anything with but it’s now time to start working on it as we have done some of the big jobs with the house. We need to knock down a lot of the out buildings and stuff so we’ve decided to sort out skip hire. Thankfully my friend has a skip hire company called easyskiphire.co.uk which is good as we’re already working on a budget so it will be nice to have something cheap for once. I’m hoping that I’ve ordered the right skip hire size.

I believe it’s time for my granddad to be moved to a nursing home. We’re tried to keep him at home for as long as possible but he recently ordered a skip. It may not sound like a big deal ordering a skip but he rang easyskiphire.co.uk and when it arrived he put all his stuff out of the garden shed into it and he swears blind it isn’t a skip but it’s a new garden shed. He’s done similar things like this and he just can’t make sense of the situation.

My friend is a bit of a clean freak and everything has to be covered in sanitizer all the time and it’s all a little bit annoying. Just think what she’s like when it comes to portable toilets. I literally can’t get her to look at portable toilets let alone use one if she’s out. I needed the loo the other day whilst out and I saw that there were some easytoilethire.co.uk portable toilets; I know they’re normally clean from that company so I went to use them. She wouldn’t go near me all day just in case I contaminated her!

I’m not the best at making sure things are looked after and I think that was definitely clear last weekend. I agreed I would help my husband work on his car and I completely forgot that I’d left the trolley jacks out after we’d finished. I thought I’d cleared everything away but I didn’t really check and I had left the trolley jacks out and they’ve now been damaged by the heavy rain we’re had so I’m off to toolsrus.co.uk in the hope to purchase some new ones.
